The Dapper Hitchhiker

The Dapper Hitchhiker

It is a truth universally acknowledged that English gentlemen traveling abroad must pursue a distinguished appearance. Thorough grooming, along with an appropriately stylish attire are essential and expected for the fortunate gentleman internationally destined. It is my hope to share some useful ideas to ensure the British hitchhiker may be properly turned out in any environment. The ideas presented here are aimed mostly toward gentlemen visiting the new world, but certainly could apply to many other locations where the Union Jack proudly unfurls.

The concept of layering is an essential component for the appropriately attired international hitchhiker.ย  The English Gentlemen should neither appear to perspire nor demonstrate a perceivable shiver; both biological results are unsuitable for public consumption. One can remove or add layers as needed, therefore toting a knapsack or satchel is required to retrieve or stash apparel as need dictates.ย  Wool attire is recommended for cooler/wetter destinations. The traveler in question preferably has stocked up on suitable European textiles prior to the excursion. Lighter cotton textiles may be worn in warm dryer climates, though be sure to check the label to confirm that the cotton is responsibly produced to European standards.

Protection from the sun is a must!  If one agrees with the adage that โ€˜the sun never sets on the empireโ€™, then one must also acknowledge that protecting oneself from Apolloโ€™s blistering gaze must be prioritized. A proper, yet stylish cap is a must, as it protects the wearer from the sun while also keeping the hitchhikerโ€™s unkempt hair from unchecked merriment above oneโ€™s brow.

Always carry the Kings Colours handy and be willing to unfurl when a little nod to home nation is appropriate. Most nations the world over have deep seated envy for the United Kingdom. Closet anglophiles span the globe, the Union Flag helps root out the allies from the rabble.

Shoes should be kept clean and/or polished.ย  The foot may be the very first appendage of the English gentleman to pass through a doorway, and thus make the key initial impression.ย  I would never wish it said of any gentleman โ€˜pleasant fellow, except for his shoesโ€™.ย  Shoes or boots should be appropriate for the terrain and should never track dust upon the carpet. โ€˜Leave only footprintsโ€™ is for the uncouth, the English gentleman should leave only broken hearts. ย

To sum up this post, the gentleman hitchhiker should consider their appearance as an outward demonstration of their artistic expressionism.
It is not enough to have chiseled a fine body and then purposely limit that substantial glory by displaying substandard fashion. Great care should be made in the apparel selected for traveling abroad. And very careful thoughtful grooming once on the road is the essential first layer of โ€˜apparelโ€™. Grooming to accessorize haute couture with carefully brushed hair, sweet fair breath, gentile cleanliness, and masculine yet fragrant odour completes the distinguished hitchhikers appearance. The lasting indelible memories of those inhabitants encountered in exotic journeys whom must remain tethered to foreign lands and cultures may long be pondered and forever cherished.

Cheers, nca
